Tips for Vacation Watering

Are you planning on going on vacation soon and you are worried about who will water your plants while you are away?

If you answered Yes! Then you should consider purchasing a self watering or automatic watering system.

These are great, because you can set them up before you leave and when you return your plants will look as great as the day you left, maybe even a bit better because they will have regular watering.

Self Watering Plant Containers

Self watering plant containers are the perfect solution if you’re going on vacation or too busy to remember to water your houseplants as regularly as you should. Depending on the size of the container and the plant, a self watering plant container will keep the soil around your plants moist for up to a week, so all you need to do is fill the reservoir once or twice weekly.

You can use self watering plant containers to grow a variety of plants, including flowers, small indoor-type shrubs, or even herbs and tomatoes.

Automatic Watering Systems

If you’re planning to be away for a longer period, you’ll need an automatic plant watering device. A six-gallon device can be used to water up to twenty plants for up to six weeks, depending on the types of plants you have. You simply place the water reservoir on a table or shelf above the plants which require watering. The device is connected to a series of drippers which are staked in the soil around each plant. The device will control the flow of water to the plants.

A mains or battery powered device work in a similar way, but the water is delivered to the plants by means of a pump, so you don’t need to set the reservoir on a higher level than the plants. The more sophisticated models can be programmed.
