Using your sprinkler heads correctly can make a huge difference to the efficiency of your garden and lawn irrigation system. 

If you’ve designed your garden and lawn irrigation system wisely, you’ll have chosen the appropriate types of sprinkler heads for each specific watering purpose. Impact sprinkler heads are ideal for large areas, while oscillating and rotor heads are better for garden beds, or smaller scale lawn irrigation. Spray heads and drip irrigation systems deliver very precise amounts of water directly to specific plants, exactly when they’re needed.

However, there’s more to running a good garden and lawn irrigation system than just having the right sprinkler heads in the right place. Proper maintenance to keep your sprinkler heads in good working order is also very important.

A few handy maintenance tips for your sprinkler heads.

Less expensive plastic nozzles and components will tend to wear out more quickly, and are damaged more easily than brass or stainless steel products. Of course, the other side of the equation is that they’re cheaper to replace, so make sure you replace them as soon as they wear out.

If the nozzle is blocked or scratched, you’ll get an uneven spray pattern, causing some areas to miss out on watering. If this is the case, it’s usually best to replace the nozzle, rather than trying to clean it. It’s also a good idea to check if there is dirt, or an insect stuck in the pipes and flush them out.

If you have pop-up sprinklers, and you find they’ve stopped popping up when they’re supposed to, it’s also probably just a matter of clearing a blockage. Gently pressing down the riser with your foot while the sprinkler is turned on may be enough to solve the problem. This is best done on a warm day, with your swimsuit on. Otherwise, you may need to remove the nozzle and clear the pipes.
